The Crazies (2010)
Though technically not zombies in the traditional sense (neither are the Rage zombies) but zombie enough to get into this theme for Junespoloitation.
I loved the tension that this built up from the very start, discovery after discover, a little weird then a little weirder until all out explosion of The Crazies.
Government conspiracies, chemicals in the drinking water, useless military interventions with all the subtlety we expect from them in film… all set in small town America.
The hospital and garden fork though!
Then a journey to safety and redemption, through the fires and streets of a Breugelian hellscape.
Oliphant is wonderful throughout this, tough but caring and sensitive.
Had the atmosphere of The Mist (2007) to it, that feeling of despair and greyness.
Not too gory but just enough to keep you going, nice feeling of creep in the crazies themselves, jump scares, and tense build ups.
Another fun film this June.
