Sugar Hill (1974)

Once again I’m going to join in with Junesploitation when I can, and once again I’m a little bit late to the party!

So the theme for the 4th was Blaxploitation, a genre I’ve seen a lot of so it was hard to find a film on streaming I’ve not already watched.

But in the end I found Sugar Hill, a zombie revenge film.

As with most Blaxploitation films I’ve watched the production values and acting were extremely shoddy, but this rarely detracts from my enjoyment of a film like this.

Early on Sugar’s boyfriend is killed for not selling his nightclub to some really shady guys and this kicks off the whole story.

She goes in search of Mama Maitresse to use voodoo to get revenge, making a deal with Baron Samedi, the lao of death, who makes a deal to give her zombies to enact her wrath.

Though slow throughout we were well served with all the tropes I’ve come to expect; white pant suit, terrible practical effects that don’t detract from the film, snakes and gators (very Live and Let Die), voodoo dolls, a cop who went to get advice from a Van Helsing type expert, some great funky music, and a diabolical script.

Again none of this detracted from my enjoyment of this film.

The payment to Baron Samedi twist at the end was excellent!
